'Nen te ne jí' is the second instalment in the 'Waves' trilogy. Using found & archival footage and my own material, the piece is a commemoration of Italian immigrant presence in Montreal.
The project started following a move to Montreal's Little Italy neighbourhood: here lay the history of generations of Italian-Canadians, whose narratives existed perhaps within families or micro communities, or in the clichéd and simplified storylines in popular cinema. My own recordings acted as a way to connect with the lived spaces and to provoke the spirits still haunting them. The everyday stories of the neighbourhood are now lost, but I searched for the traces of its families, and their first movements here: Were they happy? Did they regret their journey? In what ways would they continue to keep their traditions alive here? And - a question that I continue to ask myself as a second-generation immigrant, what has been left behind?
